Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches: The Alphabet of Ba Zi
A complete reference guide to the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches — the building blocks of Ba Zi, the Chinese calendar, and all of Chinese metaphysics. Includes pinyin, elements, and personality associations.
The Building Blocks of Chinese Time and Destiny
These two sequences cycle together in pairs, creating a 60-unit cycle (the Sexagenary Cycle, or 干支, Gān Zhī) that has been used to track time, date events, and map destiny for over 3,000 years. Every Ba Zi chart is built entirely from these characters — 8 of them (two per pillar), each pair drawn from this ancient system.
The 10 Heavenly Stems
乙 Yǐ — Yin Wood: The diplomat. Flexible, persistent, socially intelligent. Like ivy that finds a way around every obstacle.
丙 Bǐng — Yang Fire: The Sun. Generous, warm, magnetic. Needs recognition; gives energy freely.
丁 Dīng — Yin Fire: The candle. Focused, perceptive, intimate. Burns steadily and illuminates what coarser light misses.
戊 Wù — Yang Earth: The mountain. Immovable, protective, authoritative. The anchor everyone depends on.
己 Jǐ — Yin Earth: The garden soil. Nurturing, detail-oriented, fertile. Grows others' potential at its best.
庚 Gēng — Yang Metal: The sword. Decisive, direct, courageous. Can cut through ambiguity — and sometimes, relationships.
辛 Xīn — Yin Metal: The gemstone. Refined, exacting, aesthetic. High standards in work and in life.
壬 Rén — Yang Water: The river. Flowing, resourceful, strategic. Wide network, big-picture thinking, adaptable.
癸 Guǐ — Yin Water: Morning dew. Intuitive, gentle, deeply perceptive. Reads situations and people with quiet accuracy.

酉 Yǒu — Rooster (5pm–7pm): Metal element. Precise, observant, detail-oriented. High standards; can be critical.
戌 Xū — Dog (7pm–9pm): Earth element. Loyal, principled, protective. Deep sense of justice.
亥 Hài — Pig (9pm–11pm): Water element. Sincere, generous, philosophical. Seeks depth and authenticity.
The 60-Year Cycle: How the Stems and Branches Combine
Because 10 and 12 share a common factor of 2, odd stems only pair with odd branches, and even stems only pair with even branches. This creates 60 (not 120) combinations — and one complete cycle takes exactly 60 years.
This is why reaching your 60th birthday is traditionally celebrated as especially significant in Chinese culture: you've completed one full cycle of the calendar and returned to the year of your birth combination.
Hidden Elements: The Secret Layer of the Branches
For example: the Horse branch (午) has a main hidden stem of Ding Fire (丁), with a secondary hidden stem of Ji Earth (己). The Tiger branch (寅) conceals Yang Wood (甲), Yang Fire (丙), and Yang Earth (戊).
These hidden stems create additional elemental layers in your chart — which is why even two people with the same four surface pillars may have subtly different Ba Zi readings when a practitioner reads the hidden stems. This depth is part of why Ba Zi rewards study: there are always more layers.

What are Heavenly Stems in Chinese astrology?
The 10 Heavenly Stems (天干) are one of two interlocking sequences that form the Chinese calendar and Ba Zi system. Each stem represents a specific yin or yang expression of one of the five elements: Wood (甲乙), Fire (丙丁), Earth (戊己), Metal (庚辛), Water (壬癸).
What are Earthly Branches in Chinese astrology?
The 12 Earthly Branches (地支) are the second sequence in the Chinese calendar system. They correspond to the 12 Chinese zodiac animals (Rat through Pig), the 12 two-hour periods of the day, and the 12 months of the year. Each branch is associated with a primary element and contains hidden stems.
How do I know my Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch?
